Scribble=$$$

Writers, hang on to your scribbles! Your shopping list may one day be worth a small fortune...to someone, if not you. Yesterday (January 3, 2013) the Wall Street Journal reported that there are people who deal in writers' memorabilia, and it doesn't even have to be memorable. In addition to marked up manuscripts, legal pads, notebooks and tax returns all qualilfy. Sadly, most writers operate digitally these days, reducing the number of scratched out story lines stored in attic boxes. So it might be well to keep some handwritten notes on your work and mark them "Do not discard." Your great grandchildren might actually benefit from what your children may once have tossed in the dumpster.

  1. Very interesting post. This seems almost too good to be true. I can understand wanting anything from a celebrity, but ordinary folk's stuff isn't usually treasured. Perhaps owning hardback and paperback books may return to being a sign of affluence. It was a status indicator in the past--maybe in the future as well.

  2. I don't know about my scribble pages being worth money, but I do know kids LOVE to see them when you do school visits. So that's a more immediate reason to save them!

  3. Oh, I like Gale's reason! That's why I've always dreamed of keeping scribbled pages. I have dreamed of showing them to kids so they can understand the power of revision! And it is so cool to get to do school visits now and actually get to show these scribbles to interested kids! (Although if a collector ever wants my handwritten notes that could be cool too. :o) )

  4. I'm looking forward to the day when my finished work earns cash, much less my scribbles!

  5. Well, as cursive and penmanship become less and less important (they are not taught in my kid's schools ...nope!) scribbles may well be worth something!!

    Interesting post, Linda!

    Gale - I never thought of that!! Very cool!!
