A Writer's New Year's Resolution

We are perched on the precipice of a new year, not just a new year, but a new decade. 2010! Think back to where we were a decade ago. We were worried our computers would crash with a Y2K virus. Facebook, My Space, and Twitter did not exist. None of us had web sites and none of us blogged. Now in 2009 many of us cannot make it through the day without connecting on the internet. Personally, when my internet goes down, I feel lost, out of touch, alone.

As many of you know, I am a bit of a Luddite when it comes to social networking. My critique mates dragged me, not quite kicking and screaming, but at least hesitantly, into the world of blogging. With the publication of my book, I was compelled to launch my personal web page, which you can visit at MegWiviott.com. I have been resistant to committing to anything more. But now, when Friday morning dawns and I am faced with a new decade, I am resolved to take on at least one new form of social networking. How many of you will join me?

That's right. My New Year's Resolution for 2010 is to join either Twitter or Facebook. Yikes! I also need to learn how to use Power Point and Scriviner (which I think has the potential to be really, really cool and helpful, but with which I keep having difficulty).

I hope you all have a very Happy, Healthy, and Safe New Year. I hope you all make resolutions that mean something to you. And I hope you stick to your resolutions beyond February - which is about when I'll start asking myself, "why did I promise to do this?"

  1. Social networking takes time, but it's totally worth it. Not only do you get your name out there, but you connect with other writers who provide news and advice.

  2. Yes, Medeia, TIME is the problem. I tend to get sucked in and spend more time online rather than writing. But I am resolved to do this!

  3. Oh, man. Twitter. Yes, I'm thinking about it too. I probably will. What a time suck. But I have friends Twittering away and they seem to be getting other writing done, so I know it's doable. Is there a particular date or month you're going to get started? Let me know and I'll join you.

  4. Hummmm....MG, you're asking me to be specific now! I figured I had a year to procrastinate and that I'd join in 364 days. Maybe it's better that I set a date.

  5. Well, you'll already have friends on Facebook so what are you waiting for??

Twitter is a slow game for me - much more interesting when Neil Gaiman tweets he's picking veggies for breakfast from his garden than if I were to tweet the same thing, lol. I do think there is value in the social network game - so while I'm still learning, I know it's all worth it! (I'll also follow you on Twitter!!)

  6. I'm on Twitter, but only tweet sporadically. That sounds funny, doesn't it?

I'm on facebook too and have to say the format suits me much better. For 2010, I'll commit to updating my FB at least twice a week.

Best wishes on a more social 2010! :)

  7. I'm heading to your website right now. Blogging takes some time, but it's so great to belong to the community of supportive writers.

  8. Should I do Twitter or Facebook? Such decisions.
    Robin is committed to Facebook.
JA, I thought you already were on Twitter?
    Lena likes FB too.
TerryLynn, I agree the company I've met online have been wonderfully supportive.

  9. Meg, I'm on Twitter, but I've never tweeted. I love reading other tweets, though. It is time to step up my game.

  10. Good for you! I think Facebook and Twitter are really different. I suppose I like facebook more but Twitter would be easier and faster if you needed something easier.

  11. JA - You've been a Twitter Lurker?!
Christina - I'm leaning towards an easier, less time consuming commitment.

  12. Wow, Meg, I can't believe you're actually considering joining Twitter. It's a brave, new world indeed! Happy new year!

  13. I've definitely become a big fan of Twitter. It definitely does not have to be time consuming (though it is fun and addictive). I'll follow you if you sign on!

For now, I think I'm staying away from Facebook. I just don't need one more technology. My writing resolution for this year is simple (and incredibly important)-- find ways to spend more time writing.
