Kathleen Duey - Writing Tip of the Day

I ditched my first draft and am rewriting now, and I have to say, I totally agree with this advice!

Thanks for posting this. Where does this originate? Do you know? Could you do another post on specific details about your process and how this approach was best? I'd love to hear more.

    Thanks!

  2. Sounds like excellent advice to me. It would be hard to do a "cut and paste" on a character and not have it look like just that. You'd always be in danger of missing the change in how a character responds to a situation or forgetting to revise some dialogue that no longer fits.

  3. Oh, I just don't want to hear that right now - even though it's what I've done with my other novels.

I'm still in the construction phase on this one!

Thanks (I think) for the tip :)

  4. Sounds scary, but I keep hearing this over and over. So there must be something to it...

  5. Arrrgh!! I wish I'd heard this advice about a year ago. I changed a main character and have had the worst time getting the story to work. Guess I should have started over from scratch. Great, great tip.

  6. Linda,
I will post on that soon. I found the clip on youtube. It's amazing what you can find on there.

    Gale,
I still do look for nuggets in my original draft, though. it may be a half-page of dialogue here and there.

    Robin,
Keep writing! Maybe this one will be straight revision! Fingers crossed!

    CL,
It's surprisingly not scary. John Green says that he tosses 90% of his first drafts!

    MG,
It's a lot easier to write when you really know your characters inside and out. So sometimes starting over is the quickest path.
